Black Life series: Gabriel(e) Christian

Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive

riffs are an experimental reignition of a matrilineal lineage of opera and jazz improvisation.. Sourcing from 365 poem-instigations written over 800 days on my Instagram social feed, riff I invited six black femmes / themmes in my life (including my mother) to reinterpret them in performance as part of the Black Life series, programmed by Chika Oyoke and RyanAustin Dennis, at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archie (BAMPFA) in March 2019.

poem transcript (read in performance by the late Monica Hastings-Smith)
